Re: "Equal"s
Reaching back into the '60s, I always thought you could've swapped out Bart Starr and Len Dawson.

Re: 1971 NFL season discussion
Why was he not coaching in 1973? I think he just got sick of the meddling from the front office, from what I have read. Makes sense, because GM Russ Thomas was an incompetent. Spot on. Joe didn't need the money---he was a very successful businessman---and he sure didn't need the aggravation. He gav...

Re: Aught Oh
Loved this guy. The ultimate grunt. "00" was one of the reasons the original AFL was so cool and the Raiders so bad ass.

Re: Most impressive/interesting achievement
Seeing Toby Harrah's name reminds me of one of those factoids you absorb as a kid and never forget: He once played an entire doubleheader at shortstop without ever touching the ball -- no chances, no assists, no putouts. Which in turn reminds me of the romantic couple at the ballgame who smooched o...

Re: Most impressive/interesting achievement
I always go back to Bake Turner's stat line for 1962 Colts: 1 rec, 111 yds, 1 TD. Hard to beat an 111 YPG! Turner caught a 74-yd TD in one game (I think the finale), but in an earlier game the rookie was credited with 37 receiving yds after the original receiver lateraled the ball to him. On that pa...

Re: Worst draft classes for a team
To cite one example, the Packers in 1944 drafted 30 (!!!) players, only one of whom even made the team. The "prize" of that draft class was Alex Agase, who played six seasons -- for four teams other than Green Bay. Offhand I wonder how many of those 30 draft picks didn't play because they...

Re: Michael Strahan- Did he only make the HOF because of his storybook ending?
Certainly playing in NYC doesn't hurt an athlete's chances for making the HOF in any sport. Being personable and media savvy can't hurt either. But all this increases a guy's chances only a tiny bit, though that sometimes can be enough to make the difference for someone who's straddling the fence. P...

Re: What's the biggest football moment you witnessed in person?
I haven't been to very many myself, but in retrospect a couple stand out: * Oct. 24, 1971---Saw ChucK Hughes die on the field at Tiger Stadium. My girlfriend (future wife) and I got free tix from my brother, who had just won them in an all-nite poker game. I remember what a wet, dreary day it was (a...

Apparently Hadl hurt his arm halfway through and the passing really fell off, * True, he hurt his back ... and it affected his throwing I read that John Hadl and some other Rams were pushing a car when Hadl hurt his back causing his performance to fall off considerably the second half of the 1973 s...
