Re: "AP Only" School of Thought

Thanks Mr. Turney for your contributions to the awards section at the PFWA site. From 1967-1974 they list no NFL or AFL MVP/Player of the Year selections, but some local PFWA chapters announced post-season honors during those years, such as in 1969 when the New York Chapter of the PFWA named Daryle ...

Re: Super Bowl I rebroadcast on NFL Network

I was saddened to learn that Jim Simpson passed away earlier this week at the age of 88. He was quite a versatile announcer, having called World Series games, the Olympics and other big sporting events. I put this post here because it's his play-by-play call for NBC Radio that's going to be heard w...

Re: Best CFL squads ever

On the eve of the 100th Grey Cup in 2012, The Toronto Star named their top 5 CFL teams of all-time: 1) 1981 Edmonton Eskimos (14-1-1) 2) 1995 Baltimore Stallions (15-3) 3) 1997 Toronto Argonauts (15-3) 4) 1967 Hamilton Tiger-Cats (10-4) 5) 1956 Edmonton Eskimos (11-5) All of those teams won Grey Cup...

Re: First NFL game between 2 African-American starting QBs?

A CFL game on July 24, 1974 (Hamilton @ Montreal) featured two African-American starting QB's going head-to-head in Week 1: Jimmy Jones (Montreal) 13 of 21 for 182 yards, 2 td. passes and 1 interception http://cfl-scrapbook.no-ip.org/images/Jones.Jimmy-Mtl1.JPG Chuck Ealey (Hamilton) 10 of 26 for 19...

Re: QBs who remind you of pitchers ... and vice versa

Sonny Jurgensen and Gaylord Perry - Paunchy players with great arms on lousy teams. I remember Perry was a little paunchy when he pitched up here with the Mariners, but not so much when he pitched in the '60's and '70's. Another Jurgensen comparison could be Rick "Big Daddy" Reuschel, who...

Re: Postseason matchups that you would have liked to seen...

1970 - 49ers vs. Colts SB V (would love to have seen John Brodie in a Super Bowl) 1975 - Raiders vs. Cowboys SB X (Stabler vs. Staubach would have been fun) 1980 - Chargers vs. Eagles SB XV 1986 - Browns vs. N.Y. Giants SB XX1 (Cleveland fans deserved at least one Super Bowl team during the 1980's) ...

Re: Your nominations for worst football card ever

[quote="Teo"]Something interesting that occurred in the CFL Topps cards of the 60's is that the Calgary Stampeders always had a green-colored uniform in the cards (for the record, the Stampeders always wore red unis) In the 1963 & 1964 Topps CFL sets, the Saskatchewan Roughriders were ...

Re: 1970s Controversial Plays

[1977 seemed to be the most memorable year for that. On top of the ones mentioned, there was a missed call that nobody remembers because it didn't lead to defeat for the affected team. With about 7:00 left in the fourth quarter, and Denver up 24-21 over the Steelers in their Divisional playoff game...

Re: Peter King Top 20 Games of All Time c. 1997

Another candidate: 1969 Vikings-Rams 23-21 playoff game. One of the best games for sure, but for some reason it doesn't always get mentioned in various "Greatest Games" discussions (not the case in this forum where it's been recognized numerous times). I think King's list is missing a few...
