Re: TCM football movies (Tue, Sep 5, 8pm ET)

North Dallas Forty was released in August 1979. During the 1970s, along with announcing, Don Meredith had several acting roles. I read that Meredith was offered the Seth Maxwell role in the movie but turned it down. He said, "I was afraid people would think that character was me." It was n...

Re: Worst RBs/WRs with a 1000 yard season?

Steve Owens had an injury-plagued career as well after playing well in 1971 for the Lions. Tony Reed had a similar career with KC as a runner without the Heisman Trophy. A good second year in 1978 before succumbing to injuries. In the 1974 Thanksgiving Day Game against Denver, Steve Owens had a 27-...

Re: Herschel has found some rivals...

That is probably the most similar precedent to the Wilson trade. Hadl's dropoff seemed just as out of nowhere, too. Albeit more typical of QBs in their mid-30s in that era; I can't imagine GB thought it'd get more than 3 quality years out of him, so what possessed them to give that much?! Dam Devin...

Re: Herschel has found some rivals...

It seemed like after the Herschel trade, no one in the NFL made another trade for like 25 years because they were too scared. Here are some older trades that I recall being one sided: *Browns trading Doug Atkins and Ken Gorgal to Bears for 3rd and 6th round picks *Browns trading Henry Jordan to Pac...

Re: Coaches who were fired after 10+ win seasons

Bert Jones injuries did in Marchibroda, who didnt like working for Irsay anyway. Marchibroda helped develop Gabriel, Kilmer, Jones, Kelly, Harbaugh and Testeverde ... not bad. The only QB he couldnt develop was Vince Evans ... It was said at the time that Ted Marchibroda taught Bert Jones to use hi...

Re: 1986- The fall of 3 football empires

Landry had three straight losing seasons, with the last being 3-13. Why would anyone be surprised a coach with that record would lose his job? If Landry was the Great Man he was purported to be, why didn't he have the grace to step down? As others have pointed out, Cowboys fans were demanding Landry...

Re: Ejections

Jim Brown was ejected from his last regular season game in 1965 against the Cardinals in St. Louis. Brown and DE Joe Robb had a "quick flareup" as Brown called it, and both shook hands. But both were thrown out. JB had 12 carries for 74 yards and had scored his 21st TD of the season. He mi...

Re: Detroit @ Dallas - 1970 Divisional Round

I saw the Cowboys 5-0 win over the Lions on TV at the time and saw a replay a few years ago. It was striking how bad Landry and Morton were. IIRC, Morton had a damaged elbow which impacted him throughout the playoffs. Another impact to the passing game was the loss of Lance Rentzel during the last ...

I remember Johnny Lujack as an analyst on pro and college football games on TV in the 60s. He was wearing a fedora, very articulate.

Re: Detroit @ Dallas - 1970 Divisional Round

It was Greg Landry, not Munson, who started for the Lions and went 5-12 for 48 yards. Landry had won the starting job around midseason and had done very well down the stretch as the Lions went on a winning steak to take the wildcard spot. Landry was bad and Bill Munson relieved him on, I think, the ...
