Re: 1974 Dallas Cowboys

They had 9 games decided by a touchdown or less in the 14-game regular season. They lost 5 of those games. They lost 6 total all year. The other loss was an 8-point loss to the Giants. So, close games were a factor. They started 1-4, so that was also a factor. 3 of those first four losses were by a ...

Re: 1959 Packers

Yes, this sounds like an interesting series. And that scouting report book is excellent. I think it's called something like, "What they didn't tell us." It's not easy to find. I highly recommend John Eisenberg's "That First Season" which covers the 1959 Packers. Interesting team ...

Re: Goal Posts

"For some odd reason the St. Louis Cardinals continued using the offset H-shaped posts in 1967. They waited until 1968 to switch to the sling-shot style. Does anyone know why?" Maybe - and this is just another guess - I think the Cardinals first used Busch Stadium rather than the old Sport...

Re: Goal Posts

Might not have been a league wide rule because stadiums were multi-use, the NFL might not have had the resources to put it in league wide. Just a guess. The extension of the goal posts in 1966 was because of the 1965 Western Division Playoff between Green Bay and Baltimore. Jim Tunney was the offici...

Re: Wards of the League (new book about the 1952 Dallas Texans)

I spoke with Mike a few times while he was shopping for a publisher. He shared with me a lot about the story and his research. This book is an important one for anybody serious about the history of the league, as this is really the only material that I'm aware of that draws information about the 195...

Re: punting career of Bill Bradley

I've gotten to chat with him some - and he told me that he made the Eagles as a punter. If you're aware of the Big 33 high school all-star game, he said he made the Texas team as a punter first, backup QB second - so, his punting goes all the way back to high school. He said he started playing DB in...

Re: Aaron Donald Retires

First ballot HOF. Alan Page and Joe Greene are the only two DT that I've seen that compare. I'm not quite old enough to remember Bob Lilly. But Donald is one of those guys who is one of the greats at his position. The Packers beat the Rams in the playoffs the year before the Rams won the Super Bowl....

Re: Another 'NFL Throwback' from YouTube - EVERY SUPER BOWL RANKED

I'm not knocking them down as to what players/coaches did before or after. I just focus on the season a team made the SB and won or lost it. If a team catches lightening in a bottle, and rides that to a dominant season for just that year, it's weird to me to penalize. I guess if I am judging Super ...

Re: Another 'NFL Throwback' from YouTube - EVERY SUPER BOWL RANKED

First Super Bowl I watched was SB 11. SB 13 is still one of the best IMO. SB 14 was also great. I agree that the Patriots/Panthers Super Bowl was another very exciting game and underrated with the other two I mentioned. My Top 10 of games I watched live as they happened would be (including the last ...
