Re: thoughts on source notation for a book

I've done a bunch of books for all sorts of publishers, and while each publisher has their own preference, that doesn't mean they aren't flexible. If an author prefers a particular style of citing sources, he should certainly say so. Wayne State University Press has just published my book on the 195...

Re: What happened to the '64 Bears defense?

From what I can remember reading, there was a lot of dissension after the title game win. Halas didn't give out the expected raises and goodies many of the players felt they were entitled to. They did bounce back in '65, though, thanks to a couple guys named Butkus and Sayers. There also was a dark ...

Re: Your personal Hall-of-Fame

I think Buddy Parker should be in. He was an innovator, had Paul Brown's number, and had a long string of successes as a player and coach. As a rookie back he scored TD and had INT in 1935 title game vs NYG as Lions won their first championship. Was assistant coach (and "brains" of Cardina...

That's where I went wrong. I was thinking PBR instead of PFR. A Pabst for the house!

Re: 1973 Dolphins at Raiders

I'm wondering if it had anything to do w/ the A's clinching their division that weekend in Chicago? The next day they started their last home stand of the season, to be immediately followed by the playoffs and World Series. Possibly the ball club figured there wouldn't be enough time to get the fiel...

Re: Most TD passes in a season by a non QB?

I forgot all about Crow. I just looked at PFR---on 8 different occasions he threw 3 or more passes in a game. In a 1961 game vs. Washington he attempted 6 passes (completed 2, including a TD, and had a pick). To me that really is startling, just from the POV of trying to fool the defense. But you're...

Re: The Dancing Bear

I always found it interesting that Browns DE Len Ford had a total of 3 interceptions in back-to-back NFL title games: 2 vs. the Lions in '54 and 1 vs. LA in '55. In fact, his postseason totals of 3 picks for 45 yards exactly matched his regular season career totals. That and a nickel will get you......

Re: Injuries that changed the course of a franchise

Yeah, it's fun to speculate on those '62 Lions---and beyond. Don Shula left as defensive coordinator after the season to become Colts HC. Schmidt said the winning formula would've been to promote Shula to Detroit HC and move Wilson to GM, where he was more comfortable and valuable. Instead we got Ru...
