Re: Ranking all NFLCG winners, '33 thru '65
Neft-Cohen's Pro Football: The Early Years lists all NFL players and their years of military service (pp. 160-161). Here are the totals by year: 1941--44 (we tend to forget that the draft started in late 1940) 1942--202 1943--376 1944--418 1945--358 Ah, I had forgotten about that feature in the Nef...

Re: Ranking all NFLCG winners, '33 thru '65
Maybe it was that the War was already depleting things in '42 though not quite as bad as, say, a couple years later. You think of some classic Battle-of-Unbeatens. Yale/Harvard '68, MIami/Penn State '86. In each case, despite both being undefeated, one (Yale/the U) seemed more superior/dominant. We...

Re: Ranking all NFLCG winners, '33 thru '65
My "ranked too low" team is the 1942 Redskins. They went 10-1 and then beat an undefeated team to win the championship! I think that entitles them to a little more respect.

Re: Goal Posts
Anecdotally...I remember once reading somewhere (maybe an article from the '30s or '40s) that the reason the NFL didn't move the posts to the back of the EZ (as college teams had, evidently sometime in the '20s) was because it wanted to cut down on the number of tie games. Placekicking being what i...

Re: Obscure trivia
Tony Canadeo Good one. I think he's the most obscure 1,000-yard rusher from the days when that was still a rare accomplishment -- i.e., before Jim Brown and Jim Taylor. Feathers is remembered because he was the first; Spec Sanders because he was the first to average 100 yards per game; Van Buren wa...

Re: Obscure trivia
I have Lowe as being 29 at the start of the 1965 season, so I don't have him on my list. But perhaps that's a technicality. According to pro-football-reference, Lowe turned 30 in September 1966, so calling him 29 in 1965 doesn't seem like a technicality. I thought of Dick Bass and Floyd Little, but...

Re: Obscure trivia
Name the player... - I played for exactly 2 teams in my 9 year career. Both teams from the same division. - My team won the league championship 3 times. - I was a player on offense. - I was a teammate of two Hall of Fame quarterbacks - I was a teammate of one Hall of Fame running back. Bob Talamini...

Re: More fodder. . .
Philosophically, they did call more groundings but fewer than I saw happen. A QB can fiht, flail, play 100% while a defender who has to go 80% when he gets near a QB so there is a competitive disadvantage to begin with, and if a QB can just flip the ball away inside the pocket like they can now out...

Re: More fodder. . .
"Eliminating the pocket requirement might help quarterbacks avoid the types of hits that produce injuries." I don't think that's true. It seemed to me that they called intentional ground more last year than any time in the last decade or so (which means like once every two games, but still...
