Buffone's career covered an interesting time in NFL history (1966-1979). He may have been the oldest LB in the NFL at the end of his career. He falls in the Reggie Williams category of good, durable player who never made the pro bowl.

....just left linebackers alone in the time frame of his career was a group of very talented players; starting with dave robinson in '66, then wilcox in the early 70's. an aspect of doug b's. career that is overlooked by the media; he was part of the standard 4-3 defense, the "dooley" defense in '67 that was a hybrid nickel, to late in his career in '78 that the bears aligned in a 3-4 defense under buddy ryan, and finally a play-off berth in his final year.

He made Dick Butkus a better player. Butkus did not have as much ground to cover with the support of Doug Buffone. Imagine how great both would have been with just an average offense that gave them less playing time.
