Good Position Groups on Bad Teams

Post by Shipley »

Two examples to start the discussion, the receiving corps of the late 60s Redskins (Bobby Mitchell, Charley Taylor and Jerry Smith) and Eagles (Ben Hawkins, Harold Carmichael, Harold Jackson).

Would the Saints Dome Patrol LB corps of Sam Mills, Vaughan Johnson, Rickey Jackson, and Pat Swilling qualify?

The Saints never had a losing season between 1987 and 1993. (They were 8-8 twice.)

Offensive line of 1973 San Diego Chargers. Carl Mauck, Walt Sweeney, Doug Wilkerson, Russ Washington, Terry Owens. Great, veteran group on a lousy team. Four of the five came back the next year and were a big part of Don Woods' surprising rookie season.

The legendary Smith/Frederick/Martin etc. Cowboys O lines of recent years come to mind, couple winning seasons in there but these guys have been together a long time now on mostly highly mediocre Jason Garrett coached Cowboys teams.

Shane Lechler and Sebastian Janikowski on a lot of those bad Raiders teams after the Super Bowl loss to Tampa Bay.

Buffalo Bills' 1968 secondary, holdovers from their championship teams -- Butch Byrd, Booker Edgerson, George Saimes and Tom Janik. Had three pick sixes off Joe Namath in their only win of the season.

Late 70's Giants LBs

Harry Carson, Brad Van Pelt & Brian Kelley

Switched to 3-4 in 79' Dan lloyd was the fourth so he didn't help make them better.
