George Blanda 1967 to 1968

Post by LeonardRachiele »

When George Blanda died in 2010, the media recalled his amazing five game streak in 1970.  Nevertheless, this was not the only time he came through for the Oakland Raiders.  Let's review  his feats over age 40.  Recall that Blanda played seven years with the Houston Oilers from 1960 to 1966.  Houston won two AFL and one Division title the first three years.  After that, the Oilers went downhill.  Fans starting booing and Houston released Blanda after the 1966 season.

1967
Week 12 Oakland at Houston

With a 10-1 record the Raiders came into play the 7-3-1 Oilers.  Blanda missed a first quarter field goal amid boos and laughter.  Houston led 7 to 0 at the half.  In the third period, George lined up again for a field goal and the boos rang once again.  Now Blanda started kicking up the middle.  His third field goal gave Oakland a 9 to 7 lead;  his fourth, with two minutes left,  assured the victory.  Final Raiders 19 Oilers 7.  All was quiet in Houston.

AFL Championship Game Houston (9-4-1) at Oakland (13-1)
Once again George Blanda boots four field goals, all from 35+ yards.  The Raiders buried Houston 40 to 7.

1968
Week 8  Kansas City (6-1) at Oakland (5-2)
In relief of Daryl Lamonica, Blanda completed 11 of 14 passes for 129 yards.  Oakland defeated the Chiefs 38 to 21.

Week 9 Oakland (6-2) at Denver (4-4)
The Raiders give Blanda his first start.  He complete 14 passes for 295 yards and four touchdowns.   One touchdown went 94 yards to Warren Wells, the longest in team history.   Oakland defeated the Broncos 43 to 7.
