Philadelphia Eagles 1958

Post by LeonardRachiele »

Three things happened to Philadelphia before this season began.

--the Eagles moved their home games from Connie Mack Stadium to Franklin Field;
--a new head Coach arrived, Lawrence "Buck" Shaw;
--traded to the Los Angeles Rams for Norman Van Brocklin.

The team in 1958 dropped to 2-9-1 from 4-8 the previous year.  No one suspected it but this was a step backward before the 1960 NFL Title.  Both wins were at Franklin Field.

Week 2 Eagles 27  New York Giants 24.  Since the Giants finished first in the East at 9-3,  this was the biggest upset of the 1958 season.  Philadelphia was trailing 24 to 17 in the third quarter.   Bobby Walston booted an 18 yard field goal in the third quarter closing the gap to 24 to 20.     Billy Barnes put the Eagles ahead 27 to 24 capping a drive with a one yard plunge.  Earlier in the game, Norman Van Brocklin threw a 91 yard touchdown pass to Tommy Mac Donald.

Week 8  Big Explosion.  Eagles 49  Chicago Cardinals 21.  Clarence Peaks scored four touchdowns, one on a reception and the others with runs.  Van Brocklin threw a 47 yard touchdown pass to Tommy Mac Donald.   On the option play,  Billy Barnes threw a 71 yard touchdown pass also to MacDonald.  Before leaving the game early, Van Brocklin completed 19 of 29 passes for 318 yards and three touchdowns.  Barnes caught seven passes for 109 yards.
