NYG under Ray Perkins, 1979-thru-'82

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

Set-up the Parcells Era during his brief time as Giants' HC, bringing in Tuna as an assistant along with Belichick, Crennel, and Bill Austin. Ron Erhardt joined in 1982. Quite a staff! Of course '81 was his playoff season, advancing past Philly at the Vet in the 1st round. '82 a respectable 4-5 almost-playoff-berth.

Of course Parcells taking over in '83 was the best scenario, but how do you feel the Giants make out moving forward if Perkins doesn't go to 'Bama? Do they become a playoff-regular at least? I'd imagine they would have been far better in '83, likely a playoff team again, if only for continuity reasons. Ray not working out in Tampa Bay later on likely a product of simply being in a bad organisation; numerous playoff-caliber coaches struggled there like Leeman and Wyche.

Further thoughts on these four years in the Meadowlands prior to Tuna taking over as HC? Rob Carpenter is definitely a player I think of. He got to shine a bit out of Earl Campbell's shadow. And Scott Brunner had some moments, more than one would think.

PS - who was, officially, the G-men's DC in Bill Parcells' first two seasons as HC? Thanks in-advance.

Brunner was terrible. I remember watching him with GB in the preseason and he looked worse than guys like Randy Wright and Blair Kiel. Every throw was loopy and late. Perkins usually had to play Brunner when Simms got hurt, but Parcells actually started Brunner over Simms. That said, I don't think the Giants do much with Perkins. He had a reputation as being very inflexible...8 years as a HC, 7 of them with 6 or fewer wins. Hard to think that he would consistently win with the Giants, but I guess that is speculative.

I think they are still good though not quite the level that master motivator Parcells would get them. You still have George Young and Ernie Adams there. The talent there would have them either in or competing for a playoff spot every year.

I do not think Parcells stays there as DC & LB coach if Perkins is still the head coach. Not sure how long he'd stick it out, someone as flighty as him, if the Giants D continued to be excellent (and I don't see why they wouldn't) then the offers will start coming in and he would be gone.

Don't have a feel as to where it would be though...perhaps he's replacing Hugh Campbell in Houston after the 1984 season or Monte Clark in Detroit in 1985? Or how about Parcells taking the Eagles job in 1986 instead of Buddy Ryan?

Oh, man. Parcells in Houston could have been huge. They would have had more discipline than they had with Glanville and Pardee, and they wouldn't have been running 4 and 5 wides on every play (which had to be a factor in their yearly January meltdowns).

They didn't list one officially in 1983 or 1984 before Belichick was named there in 1985.

Tuna landing in Houston, of course, intriguing to think of! He lands there or anywhere else, and Perkins stays on in NYG a few more years, what about Belichick and the other assistants? They stay or go?
