That's the number he was issued. It was changed after one season. Hornung's number has never been officially retired, but nobody has worn it since Majkowski. (Replacement QB Willie Gillus also wore it that season).

Thanks for that info. I had no idea he was issued that number. That made me look up the game and I realized it must have been his rookie year and his first start. That really surprised me because I thought he'd played a year or two before that. He was such a big part of the Packer resurgence (at least to locals) that I'd forgotten that I must have gone to that game without knowing much about him. I do remember thinking it was neat to see #5 on the field for the Packers - not old enough to remember Hornung so the number had some aura to it for me as a kid.

The opening kickoff of Super Bowl XLI...Devin Hester running right at me. As a lifelong Bears fan that minute was the best sports moment ever.
