On August 20, 1973 George Reed became professional football's all-time leading rusher as the Saskatchewan Roughriders beat Ottawa 18-12. His 3 yard gain with 18 seconds remaining gave him 12,313 career rushing yards, one more than NFL legend Jim Brown. Reed finished with 81 yards on the ground and scored the game's only touchdowns, including the game winner with less than 9 minutes remaining.

Neither Reed nor the 21,032 fans in attendance were immediately aware that Brown's record had been broken. After statisticians confirmed Reed's totals, an announcement was made over the public address system as players were filing off the field and fans were heading for the exits. The game was televised nationally on the full CBC network.

George Reed's all-time rushing record would stand until December 15, 1986 when it was broken by the NFL's Walter Payton.

RIP Walt Garrison

A big fan of his hard running style. A true complimentary back that every great team needs. He played well in both SB games. Just a pinch between yer cheek and gums ...

After Super Bowl VI, Walt Garrison walked up to Jim Brown, who was there "advising" Duane Thomas. Garrison said, "Mr. Brown, I've always wanted to meet you." Brown answered, "Walt, you were great."
