Re: Rank all twenty SB-participants of the '70s

Yes, I treat the '75 Steelers as a one-loss team. I think they are the best team of the modern era. Just imagine if their special teams was just a bit better? Just imagine if their special teams was MORE THAN just a bit better?? I haven't said it yet, but comparing both "for their era, adjusti...

Re: Two San Fran what-ifs (’88/’89, and early-’90s)

I will agree, had the 49ers not made the playoffs in 1988, Walsh might have been fired, and not co-written two influential football books. Then again, maybe he still would have, questioning his possible handling of the "quarterback controversy" starting with his benching of Joe Montana du...

Re: Two San Fran what-ifs (’88/’89, and early-’90s)

With the 88 49ers, my what-if is different: They were two miracle plays (Hail Jerry, Young's crazy run) from 4-7 What if they lose those Giants/Vikings games? Even at 8-8/9-7, they'd have missed out entirely How differently do the 88 playoffs play out with no SF? if they lost those games, they woul...

Re: AFC teams that just missed the playoffs in 1989

Allowing the top 10 of the 14 in the conference to play in a tournament (CFL style) isn't the worst thought or idea ever. More like... NBA -style considering the current play-in tournament going on the past few years! If we apply this to the AFC in 1989, this is what we would have had... Play-in ro...

Re: Two San Fran what-ifs (’88/’89, and early-’90s)

Interesting take, Wolf, on thinking that had Young played instead in the '88 playoffs against Minnesota or especially in the night Chicago tundra that each case may have been a totally different story than what actually did happen with Joe under center. As I said, its hard to flip two lopsided wins ...

Re: Two San Fran what-ifs (’88/’89, and early-’90s)

My mistake OP. First off, Phoenix was Wk#10, not #11, thus SF would have been 7-3 had they won; and 8-3 after beating the Raiders. Then I skipped Atlanta after both Wash & SD. Beating the Falcons as they did in realtime would have had them at 11-3 going into the final two games.

Two San Fran what-ifs (’88/’89, and early-’90s)

The first one…what-if Steve Young keeps his starting job for the rest of the ’88 season following week #11? The least that would have to happen was for they to prevent the Cards from coming back which they failed to do - giving up 24 unanswered after being up 23-0. That would place them at 7-4 inste...

Re: Rank all twenty SB-participants of the '70s

I probably have the Raiders ranked too low while, maybe, having the '79 Steelers too high. Maybe I should have Oakland at #3. The blemish(es) of that '76 Raider team that can anchor them from being even higher up on an 'all-time' list is their one loss being a blowout at New England; and then in the...

Re: Worst Steeler team post-Noll, 1999 or 2003

I'm going to go with 2003. A real promising opener over the Ravens, Maddox looking to pick up where he left off the year before. But that's as good as it got. But the defense wasn't bad, better than '99, and FWIW they ended 4-4 bringing the Ravens into OT at Baltimore whilst preventing Jamal Lewis f...
