Joe Scibelli (Los Angeles Rams)

Does anyone have memories of offensive guard Joe Scibelli with the Los Angeles Rams? To me he seems like a very overlooked player. He played fifteen years (!) with the Rams against some tough customers, ten of which as a team captain and five times named the Rams' most valuable offensive lineman wit...

Re: 1985/1986- End of an era for the Cowboys/Raiders

I have always thought it was a real testament to Tom Landry's coaching ability that Dallas won the Division title in 1985. How many good players did Gil Brandt draft after 1977? Cosbie, Christensen, Walter, Newsome, Springs, Jeffcoat, Walker, Irvin, Norton, and Walls Bates, and Downs as free agents,...

Former Indianapolis Colt RB Zurlon Tipton was killed yesterday at the age of 26 in a handgun accident at a Michigan car dealership.

Clint Longley trade to San Diego Chargers

I was reading an article by Dave Brady of the Washington Post on the 1977 Dorsett trade. He notes a first round pick (No. 14) had gone from San Diego to Dallas in the Clint Longley trade (1976). Huh? Can this be right? Tom Prothro was a bright guy with an interesting background as his sometime bridg...

Re: 2016 Obituaries

Former Baltimore Colt wide receiver Willie Richardson passed away last Monday in Mississippi. He was apparently one of four brothers who played professional football, the others being Tom, Gloster, and Ernie.

SB Betting Lines Early Years

I was looking at the betting lines for the early Super Bowls and besides the famous line in SB III, there were two that jumped out at me: 1. Vikings favored by 12 points in SB IV in Tulane Stadium - it shows how little respect the AFL received even after the Jets' win the previous year. Maybe I have...

Three Hall of Fame coaches on a single staff

I was thinking yesterday that if Tom Coughlin makes the Hall of Fame the 1988-90 New York Giants will have had three Hall of Fame coaches on their staff (Parcells, Belechick, and Coughlin). The only other instance of this I can recall is Sid Gilman, Chuck Noll and Al Davis on the early 1960's San Di...

Cornell Green (Cowboy DB) Question

A book I was reading over the weekend mentioned that Cornell Green played from 1962 to 1974 for the Dallas Cowboys, but did not play high school or college football. Are there any other non-kickers who played for ten years in the NFL but did not play college football? Bob Hayes comes to mind, but I ...

Re: What do you make of Joe Kuharich?

Ara Parseghian arrived at Notre Dame in January of 1964, and if the fighting irish had not been badly robbed by the officials in the L.A. Coliseum vs. USC that November, they would have won the national title (undefeated). In '62 with Kuharich they were .500 and '63 with Hugh Devore they were 2-7 wi...
