1967 AFL Raiders/Broncos weird game

Post by Bryan »

The 1966 Raiders were an up and coming 8-5-1 team. 1966 Broncos were their usual doormat selves, going 4-10.

The 1967 Broncos opened their season with a 26-21 win over the Patriots (who were 8-4-2 in 1966). The 1967 Raiders had a bye that first week. The Broncos and Raiders then faced each other in Week 2 of the AFL schedule, with it being the Raiders' opening game.

The Raiders won 51-0. Denver's passing statline was 2-16-17-0-1, with 7 sacks allowed for -70 yards and a net passing yardage total of -53. The total offensive yardage was 388 for the Raiders compared to -5 yards for the Broncos. Bob Scarpitto of Denver had 565 punting yards (possibly a record?). Roger Bird of the Raiders had 9 punt returns for 143 yards.

Leo Araguz had 16 punts for 709 yards and Darren Bennett 11 punts for 522 yards in this snoozefest...

Funny that the Raiders-Chargers game featured perhaps the two most overrated "offensive minds" in NFL history...Jon Gruden and Kevin Gilbride. Its amazing how far ahead Araguz's yardage total is from everyone else...15 yards separate #2 Scarpitto's game from the #10 ranked game, but Araguz's is 150 yards ahead of Scarpitto.

Just two weeks earlier, the Broncos had defeated the Raiders in a preseason game. Just one more factoid, were any more needed, to show how meaningless the results of preseason games are.

Most punts in a game by both teams occurred on 10/22/33 when the Packers and Bears combined for 31 punts. The 17 punts by Chicago in the game also stands as a record by one team in one game. Chicago scored ten points in the final four minutes to beat the Packers 10-7.

Or any previous results, for that matter; e.g., the Bears losing to the Redskins 7-3 in the regular season in 1940 and then beating the Redskins 73-0 in the championship game.

The Raiders vs. Broncos 1967 preseason game was played at a high school stadium in North Platte, Nebraska and was televised back to the Bay Area. Unlike their preseason wins over Detroit and Minnesota, footage from this game was not included in the 1967 Broncos highlight film but it provided a curious moment in AFL/Nebraska sports history:

The first time the Broncos had ever been shut out, with the Raiders coming within a point of their highest scoring output--that was their wild 1963 win over the Oilers to end the '63 season. Scarpitto punted 12 times, with the Broncos QB's getting sacked for 70 yards of losses--no mention of exactly how many sacks there were. Basketball star Rick Barry worked as a spotter for the PA guy in this game.
