Thanks Leonard ... yeah, it seemed like once the 49ers handed it to Philly this year, the Eagles lost some swagger as Dallas pounded them next. The defense just couldnt keep any momentum from the 10-1 start and without a better pass rush, left the secondary exposed, which even the Seahawks, with Drew Lock, were able to exploit. The players should rally around Fangio, who might try to bring in some Dolphins players he liked.

Re: 1991 Eagles in Detail
This is the second 17-game season ever. The Eagles played 31 games by the time they were 10-1 at the end of November going back to the start of last season. By the first week in December, after the 49ers game, they had played the equivalent of two straight regular seasons if we're talking 2020 and 2021. And they still had 5 regular season games to go. I think they might have (understandably) ran out of gas and had the nagging injuries that nobody hears about pile up. It's often a war of attrition and it's more so now with an added regular season game and more teams in the playoffs. I think this is going to happen to a lot of teams over the years. Especially if they go to 18- or 20-game seasons - which isn't unlikely.Brian wolf wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2024 10:06 pm Thanks Leonard ... yeah, it seemed like once the 49ers handed it to Philly this year, the Eagles lost some swagger as Dallas pounded them next. That still does not explain the lack of sacks and turnovers in the loss to Dallas in 91 at home.
Let me explain the Eagles changes from year to year in a general statement about Pro vs College ball. Since I was a little guy at age 8, I have always had a strong preference for the NFL vs the College game. Since the early 70s, I watched college games just to be sociable in certain places. I always found pro football much more precise and crisp. This is really obvious in the linemen, both on offense and defense. You could change my mind only under the penalty of death.
At the same time, I will say that the game is less precise than in prior days. Free agency is of course the main culprit. The talent is spread across a wider spectrum. In 1958, there were 12 teams with each playing 12 games. Today there are 32 teams with each playing 17games. I am not sure how to do the math given the extra game; but obviously I count home games for each team only.
1958 12 teams X 12 game/team X 1 game/2 teams; cancel out terms
6 X 12 game/team is 72 games
2023 32 teams X 17 games/team X 1 game/2 teams; cancel out terms;
16 teams X 17 games/team X 1 game is 272 games

Eagles and Falcons were both 10-6 and didn’t play each other
What was the tiebreaker?
