The hits keep coming, thanks John. There's alot there to chew on, particularly the Miami TD Club POY awards;

1969 Calvin Hill - NFL Rookie of the Year plus POY over Roman Gabriel

1972 Larry Csonka - His only regular season POY award (that I know of) ... Probably the only accolade that Larry Brown didn't receive in '72

1973 - Dick Anderson over O.J. (Simpson totally absent from the list) ... 3rd consecutive year that a Dolphins player wins the award

1974 & 1976 - Chuck Foreman over Ken Stabler and Bert Jones respectively

1975 - Terry Bradshaw over consensus pick Fran Tarkenton

1979 - Lee Roy Selmon over Earl Campbell (Campbell totally absent from the list)

1980 - Ted Hendricks over Earl Campbell and Brian Sipe

1982 - Another NFL POY nod to PK Mark Moseley (over Dan Fouts)

1986 - Dan Marino over Lawrence Taylor

3 defensive players chosen overall despite the absence of Alan Page in 1971 and L.T. in 1986. To me Hill was the biggest suprise in '69 but he did make 1st Team All-Pro and was 4th in the AP's NFL MVP voting. I wouldn't have guessed Ted Hendricks in 1980 but he had a great season finishing 2nd in the AP Defensive POY voting behind Lester Hayes (and he was a 3 time All-American at the Univ. of Miami).

Question: Was Bart Starr's 1966 PFWA MVP selection a N.Y. Chapter award only or was it a vote of the full membership?

The PFWA website lists Starr as their first MVP winner in 1966 (none of the N.Y. Chapter award winners are credited):

Pro Football Reference.com does not credit Starr with the 1966 PFWA MVP but Wikipedia does.

2. If they have information that says it was by the PFWA as a whole, I am not aware of it. It's possible they have internal
files that show it was an association-wide award/vote.

I cannot see a difference in any of the announcements that appeared on newswires. I don't know why they count that
one and not the others. They must have information I don't have.

Also, if they want to get technical---didn't become MVP until 1969. Was POY before that, but
it is my view that the terms were interchangeable then. I don't think UPI was NOT choosing
the MVP by design..."Hey voters, this is not an MVP award, so don't use "value" in your
criteria" . . . the AP was POY until 1961, then went to MVP, and then in 1962 back to POY
and then from 1963 on was MVP.

To me, that is the definitive example of interchangeabe terms.

It is a distinction without a difference until probably 1972 when OPOY, DPOY, and MVP
became separate in the AP award universe. In 1975 the UPI began to have conference
OPOY, DPOY . . . so then it became a thing.

Some good points. I noticed that PFWA voted Tom Landry as NFL Coach of the Year in 1966, so I guess it's possible they could have selected Starr as MVP as well ... No Chapter Awards for Coach of the Year, other than Bud Grant in 1969.
