1961 Steelers vs San Francisco @Forbes Field

The Steelers at 1-5 hosted the 4-2 San Francisco 49ers in Week 7. The 49ers installed the shotgun offense with John Brodie the main quarterback with Bobby Waters and Billy Kilmer at times as back ups. The season resembled a rollecoaster with amazing ups and downs. They seemed to confuse defenses at first; but in the end SF finished at 7-6-1.

Week 3 won at Detroit 49 to 0;
Week 4 won at home vs Los Angeles 35 to 0;
Week 5 won at Minnesota 38 to 24;
Week 6 lost at Chicago 31 to 0;
Week 7 lost at Pittsburgh 20 to 10;
Week 8 tied at Detroit 20 to 20;
Week 9 lost at Los Angeles 17 to 7;
Week 10 won at home vs Chicago 41 to 31;
Week 11 won at home vs. Minnesota 38 to 28:
Week 12 lost at home vs. Baltimore 20 to 17;
Week 13 won at home vs Green Bay 22 to 21:
Week 14 lost at Baltimore 27 to 24.

In week 7, the Steelers jumped all over San Francisco in the first quarter. John Henry Johnson ran 30 yards for a touchdown. Rudy Bukich passed 10 yards for a touchdown to Tom Tracy and now Pittsburgh led 14 to 0. On a third drive a wide open Preston Carpenter, dropped a sure 10 yard touchdown pass. Lou Michaels kicked a 16 yard field and the Steelers were now in front 17 to 0.

In the second quarter, John Brodie passed 50 yards to Monty Stickels; but that was virtually all the scoring as Pittsburgh won 20 to 10. Total yards for the game were about equal. The 49ers passed for 212 yards and the Steelers just 52. The running game 156 yards for Pittsburgh but only 56 yards for San Francisco.

The Steelers sacked Brodie for 48 yards in losses with a great pass rush. John Henry Johnson carried 15 times for 103 yards and a touchdown. R.C. Owens caught six passes for 122 yards. Final Steelers 20 49ers 10.
