On Saturday night October 10, the Steelers defeated the Cleveland Browns 23 to 7. John Henry Johnson carried 30 times for 200 yards. This set a Steeler record for most yards rushing in a game, was the year’s best performance, and the best night of his career.

The next day CBS televised to Pittsburgh the New York Giants-Dallas Cowboys game at the Cotton Bowl. Dallas put up some impressive numbers with fine individual performances but interceptions, penalties and sacks did them in. The Cowboys gained 463 yards to just 128 for the Giants. The game ended with a 13-13 tie.

The Giants led 13 to 3 at halftime. Frank Gifford ran two yards for one touchdown and Y.A. Tittle threw a six yard pass to Joe Morrison for another. Dick Van Raaphorst booted a 16 yard field goal. In the second half, Van Raaphorst booted another field goal and Don Meredith ran 10 yards for the tying touchdown.

The Giants did get four sacks for 33 yards but with just 128 yards of offense nothing else was worth mentioning. There were some fine moments for Dallas but some mistakes hurt. Dick Lynch intercepted two passes and Jim Patton got another. You can’t complain about the New York Giant defensive line; they sacked Dod Meredith seven times for 51 yards in losses. The Cowboys had some self inflicted pain with eight penalties 49 yards in losses.

The Cowboys wasted some fine performances. Don Meredith completed 21 of 41 passes for 294 yards; Don Perkins carried 17 times for 127 yards; Frank Clarke caught seven passes for 120 yards; and Tommy McDonald caught 10 passes for 108 yards. Final a tie at 13.
